Creating Multiple Choice Questions (3 posts in 1)!!

Review the prose passage (Question 2) HERE.   Then, create one multiple choice question and post it on the blog.  Once a few are posted, answer ONE ...and give a rationale for the answer.  When your question is answered, comment on the accuracy of the answer.  Try to move throughout the passage. If there are a few questions about the beginning, ask about the middle, end, or passage as a whole.  Use the sentence stems in the packet for help.

  1. What is the best way to describe how Arun feels about the way Americans live?
    a. respectful
    b. engrossed
    c. uneasy

    1. c. uneasy
"Arun finds the hair on the back of his neck begin to prickle, as if in warning. He is sweating, and the palms of his hands of becoming puffy and damp. Why must people live in the vicinity of such benighted wilderness and become a part of it?" Although this could hint at "perplexed", perplexed only implies confusion, where as uneasy implies confused, unfamiliar and anxious, which explains why he is sweating and the hair on his neck is raising.

    2. This is exactly what I had in mind when I wrote this question. I figured some might think "perplexed" but "uneasy" hints at more emotions than just one, as you stated.

    3. great job grace!! nice reasoning for backing up your choice!
Montana I like how you thought about this question. And I love that you used great vocabulary for your options.

    a.) persuasive
    b.) simple and straightforward
    c.) emotional and dramatic
    d.) satirical

    1. b. simple and straightforward

All of the sentences in this passage are rather short and blunt. This is seen in the first sentence as it reads "It is Saturday". Each action is basically just stated as it says "He stands despondent," and "Melanie comes to the door". This simplistic tone is held throughout the passage.

  3. Lines 35-36, "A bird...not vary", are used to highlight Arun's feeling that nature is:
    a) daunting
    b) mysterious
    c) cacophonous
    d) intriguing

    1. C. The answer is cacophonous because in this sentence arun describes a mixture of weird, harsh, terrible and frankly cacophonous sounds.

    2. The answer I originally had in mind was A. The noises within nature are in fact cacophonous. However, specifically regarding Arun's feelings about nature, daunting is the more concise and specific answer. I put cacophonous within the choices as a trick and maybe I should have been more specific within the wording of my question.

    3. i like this question because it is very similar to something you might see on an ap exam. They try to trick you and I like how courtney tried to trick us... veeerrrry sneakkkyyy. nice parallels

Arun does not want to embark into nature with the other characters in this passage, but because it is Saturday, there is not work to be done. He has no choice but to participate in the adventure of the day.

  5. Which of the following literary devices does Desai NOT include in her characterization of Arun’s afternoon experience?
    A) Personification
    B) Dialect
    C) Simile
    D) Idiom
    E) Characterization

    1. D). Idiom
I used elimination to answer this question. Although I was not entirely sure what Idiom meant, I saw examples of all other literary devices throughout the excerpt so I knew that these were not the correct answers.
      Personification- Description of woods
Dialect- When mother and girl speak, dialect is clear
      Simile- Several examples
Idiom- Not sure of meaning/ couldn't find examples
      Characterization- Throughout

  6. In which of these lines is there a shift in the passage?
    A) "Melanie and Arun follow silently." (19-20)
    B) "They make their way along scuffed paths...pine needles" (line 29-30)
    C) "A bird shrieks hoarsely" (36-36)
    D) "Why must people live in the vicinity...become a part of it? (46-47)

    1. C) "A bird shrieks hoarsely"
Before this line, the tone was gentle and romantic. This line, however, uses harsh adjectives like "shrieks" and "hoarsely". After this line, the mood turns more cautious and haunting.

    2. Sounds right to me Parth!! thats what I would have picked if i did these blog questions in time!! I think there could be another shift closer to the beginning, but I agree with your reasoning for the clear shift at line 36 from gentle to harsh. word choice and tone makes it clear

  7. Which of these lines portray a cultural difference from the characters?
    A) "When Melanie comes to the door... stares at him challengingly" (2-4)
    B) "They try to find a way to walk... any way close together" (20-22)
    C) "Why must people... become a part of it?" (46-47)
    D) "he stumbles... contents of the bag" (54-55)

    1. C) "Why must people... become a part of it?"
Answer D does not pertain to any sort of difference, and answers A and B are challenges of a personal nature between Melanie and Arun

  8. The line "animated prance galvanising her dwindled shanks" refers to?
    A) Mrs. Patton
    B) Melanie
    C) Wyola
    D) Arun

    1. A) Mrs. Patton
"animated prance galvanising her dwindled shanks, she leads the way...Melanie and Arun follow". Only three character's are present at this point and since Melanie and Arun follow, it is Mrs. Patton who they are following.

    3. I immediately eliminate D) and E). C)is slightly off in that the word is often used to describe one's attitude towards a problem; although Arun might find his trip a inconvenience, it's not a problem he is trying to really solve. The presence of the neck "prickle," the "sweating," and "puffy and damp" palms have me feel that A) is correct. However, his rhetorical question (as well as the previous portrayal of other characters) may indicate annoyance befitting B). The discomfort may solely be physical. Judging solely based of the vicinity the question cites, I would put A) (gut feeling), but I would not be sure.

      A)

  11. Which statement most accurately depicts Arun's attitude towards Edge Hill?

    A) Edge Hill is vibrant with activity, making it more worthwhile than a trip to the beach.
    B) Edge Hill lacks excitement but is preferable to going to the beach.
    C) Edge Hill and the beach are equally poor places to spend time at.
    D) Edge Hill lacks the excitement nature may provide.
    E) Edge Hill invades nature so much that a trip to the beach is not worthwhile.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Answer: B)
Immediately I eliminate C) D) and E) because it is clear that Arun prefers Edge Hill over the beach or any nature. A) is too positive and is ruled out when Arun says Edge Hill is "small and [has] little to offer." That leaves B).

    2. I also agree with Kate, I think the answer is (B). When I first read the question I immediately crossed out A and E. Those two answers were just too positive and random. They didn't seem to fit and I couldn't somehow back them up with what the question asked. D and C also didn't really fit. They fit more than A and E but the difference between those answers and B was that B could easily be explained and backed up with facts from the text.

  12. In the passage, the narrator is most concerned with?

    A) highlighting Arun's discomfort experiencing a new lifestyle
    B) Arun's fear of traveling through the wilderness
    C) the differences between India culture and American culture
    D) Arun's negative attitude towards his host family and the traditional American lifestyle

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. A) Highlighting Arun's discomfort experiencing a new lifestyle. I eliminated option D because Arun does not have a negative outlook towards his host family. I also eliminated C because Indian culture is not really brought up in the excerpt. Then I was left with A and B, but picked A because it was more broad and overarching of a topic than B.

      Delete
    2. I agree that the answer is A. Arun definitely seems uncomfortable in this new setting. I also thought that C could be a reasonable answer (although I think A is the best choice) because there are some aspects where Arun's confusion/discomfort may indicate that his culture is different.

      Delete
    3. Yes A was the answer I had in mind! I think the limited narration really focuses on Arun's discomfort and his vulnerability. C is also a reasonable answer although it is not stated directly in the text so the difference in the specific cultures would have to be implied.

  13. From the description of Melanie and Arun’s interaction in lines 19- 25 (“and Arun follow… with Mrs. Patton”) it can be inferred that they feel _______ towards one another.
    A) angry
    B) indifferent
    C) calm
    D) uncomfortable

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. D uncomfortable.
There is obvious tension between Arun and Melanie, so C is not the answer. Arun acts upon the awkwardness and leaves Melanie, so B cannot be the answer. As for A, neither Arun nor Melanie acts with any anger.

    3. I agree with Jack's choice of D. Although one may infer that the tension could be perceived that it is out of anger. Although I think that Jack is correct that it out of awkwardness which is followed by him leaving. I thought at first maybe he was angry to be left alone in this awkward situation. But then I read Jacks comment and agreed that there actions had no anger in them.

  15. The description of the "insidious green" (line 51) serves primarily to.
    A) Demonstrate Arun's feelings about the day.
    B) Represent Arun's internal conflicts.
    C) Warn Arun of the dangers in the forest.
    D) Summarize how Arun is uncomfortable in the wild environment.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think there a couple of answers that could work for this one. The way I interpreted it was that the "insidious green" wilderness parallels to Arun's discomfort in his american home. I eliminated C because I don't think the dangers in the forest are his biggest concern and the word warn throws me off. A only takes into account the day, but I don't think this answer captures the bigger picture of the story. I am torn between B and D, but I think I would pick D because the story references how Arun is much more uncomfortable in town than out in the wilderness.

    1. I think the answer to this question is "d". In context, Arun is talking about how he prefers the town to the forest. "insidious" means "causing unease" so it makes sense that Arun is "uncomfortable in the wild environment".

  17. In the passage "Why must people live in the vicinity
of such benighted wilderness and become a part of it?" in lines 46 and 47 "benighted" most likely means,
    a) the state of being childish and naive
    b) in a state of night, or dark
    c) being bestowed a new name and honor
    d) wild

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the answer is c, wild. You can immediately eliminate answer c because it has a positive connotation and throughout the whole passage it demonstrates who uncomfortable Arun is in the wilderness. A also doesnt really make sense within the context of the passage. B does have a negative connotation but the forest is not really described as being dark.
